Manx Squad Set for the Stage as Special Olympics Gibraltar Games Get Underway
There is a particular feeling that comes with stepping off a plane into the heat of competition, kit bag in hand, heart already racing before a single whistle has blown. For the Special Olympics Isle of Man squad, that feeling begins today, as they touch down in the sunshine to take their place among four nations battling it out at the 2026 Special Olympics Gibraltar National Games.
This is the 41st running of the Gibraltar Games, a fixture with real heritage behind it, and over three intense days, from today (24 June) through to Friday (26 June), the Manx contingent will line up against teams from Gibraltar, Algeciras and Estepona across five different sports. Athletics, futsal, bocce, ten pin bowling and swimming will all have their moment in the spotlight, each one demanding its own blend of nerve, technique and heart.
The whole occasion will be set in motion this evening with an opening ceremony at the Lathbury Sports Centre at 6pm, the kind of moment that turns nerves into excitement as flags are raised and the scale of the event sinks in. There will be little time to settle, though, as the athletics competition gets straight under way at the same venue immediately afterwards, the first real test of the trip arriving before the ceremony's applause has even faded.
Tomorrow, the rhythm of the games shifts to the SOG Sports Complex, where the futsal tournament fills the morning from 9am to 12.30pm, all quick feet and sharp turns on the small pitch. The afternoon then belongs to bocce, with the Paola Poggio tournament running from 4pm to 7.30pm at the same complex, a discipline where patience and precision count for just as much as power.
The final day brings the competition full circle. From 9.30am, the bowls events take over the Kings Bastion Leisure Centre, before the curtain comes down on the games with the swimming events at Lathbury Swimming Pool between 6pm and 8pm, the splash of the last race marking the end of three hard fought days under the Gibraltar sun.
Whatever happens across the pools, pitches and courts over the next three days, the Manx squad will be doing what matters most, representing their Island with pride and giving everything they have for every single point.
