Double gold for Isle of Man veteran Fiona Whitehead at London Masters International
There is something quietly extraordinary about an athlete who competes not for the roar of a crowd or a professional contract, but purely for the love of the discipline. Fiona Whitehead embodies that spirit entirely, and last weekend she made it count on the national stage.
The Isle of Man resident travelled to Woking for the London Masters International event, and returned home with two gold medals to show for her efforts.
Saturday brought the women's throws pentathlon, a gruelling test of all-round strength and technical skill that demands athletes perform across five separate disciplines: shot put, discus, hammer, javelin and weight throw. Each event requires its own rhythm, its own focus, its own resolve. To do all five well, in sequence, against experienced international competition, is no small feat. Whitehead did exactly that, claiming gold and announcing herself as a force in the veterans' throws scene.
She was not finished. On Sunday, she returned to the competition arena for the individual hammer event and again stood on top of the podium, converting her pentathlon form into another outright victory.
Whitehead, a member of the Veteran Athletic Club, moved to the Isle of Man in 2024 and has wasted no time in making her mark on the local athletics community. Her performances in Woking will have done much to raise the profile of masters athletics on the Island, a discipline that rewards dedication, craft and longevity above all else.
Two events, two gold medals, and a reminder that for some athletes, the best chapters are still being written.
