What to expect

Hill Training Session.

Who can join?

This session is open to all age groups, with runners ranging from ages 10 through to 60+. Everyone trains at their own effort level, and the group atmosphere is encouraging and supportive.

What you will do

This session includes multiple reps up a steep incline (30+% gradient), each lasting 10 to 15 minutes. After each uphill rep, there is a short recovery before a hard rep back down. Everyone works at their own effort, and no one is pushed beyond their comfort level. There will be coaching cues before each rep. This session is 1 of 4 in preparation for the MMM training sessions, helping runners get familiar with some of the tougher parts of the route before race day.

What to bring

Winter (Mandatory): Fell shoes, head torch, and wet-weather gear. Summer: Kit is weather dependent, but proper trail shoes are recommended.

Your first session

Your first session is FREE, but please get in touch beforehand as spaces fill up quickly. Let the coach know about any medical conditions or injuries before joining.

Weather and cancellations

We run the session in most weather conditions. If the session is cancelled, notifications will be sent via WhatsApp and on this platform (check the notifications section in the dash).

Questions and updates

We also communicate via WhatsApp, so let us know if you would like to be added to the group for updates. For any queries, you can contact us through the contact section of this website, or email nikki@estr.im

About the Coach
About the Coach

I’m Orran, a Mountain Leader and running coach with a background in endurance sport, mountain environments, and group leadership.

My work sits at the intersection of coaching, guiding, and long days in serious terrain. I support people to move well, make good decisions, and enjoy being in challenging environments, whether that’s on a mountain walk, a fell run, or an endurance project that matters to them.

I’m a fully qualified Mountain Leader (Summer) and hold multiple England Athletics coaching and leadership awards, including Coach in Running Fitness and Trail, Mountain and Fell Running Leader. I work freelance and am fully insured, first aid trained, DBS checked, and safeguarding aware.

My approach

I believe good coaching and leadership is calm, thoughtful, and adaptable. I focus on:

Clear decision making in changing conditions

Appropriate pacing for individuals and groups

Building confidence without pushing beyond what’s sensible

Creating days that feel purposeful, safe, and enjoyable

I’m comfortable working with mixed abilities and enjoy helping people develop skills, resilience, and trust in themselves over time.

Mountain and endurance experience

I have extensive experience across the UK’s main mountain areas, including Snowdonia, the Lake District, the Peak District, and Scotland, with time spent in more remote and serious environments such as Torridon and the Cairngorms.

Alongside group leadership, I have a strong personal endurance background. I’ve completed the Spine Race (Winter) twice, finishing in the top 10 on both occasions. That experience has shaped how I approach leadership: staying methodical under fatigue, navigating accurately in poor conditions, and making good decisions when it matters.

Who I work with

I work with:

  • Runners and endurance athletes
  • People new to the mountains looking to build confidence
  • Experienced individuals preparing for longer or more committing objectives
  • Groups wanting well-organised, supportive days in the hills

Whether the goal is performance, learning, or simply a good day out, my focus is always on doing things properly and safely.

Weather this evening

Orran Smith · March 3, 2026, 8:12 am · Public
The weather is looking pretty good for this evening.

It is going to be cold though so remember gloves and a buff.

The nights are getting lighter but you will still need a head torch too.

See you all later!
